Protecting the environment isn’t a luxury — it’s a necessity. As awareness of climate change, air quality, and sustainability becomes mainstream, employees and consumers are seeking greener workplaces and products. Meanwhile, corporations are responding by seeking more ways to enter the commercial recycling space and become greener, more sustainable, and more environmentally conscious.
Here are examples of larger companies going green and doing more for commercial recycling efforts.
1) Google — More than just the most widely recognized internet search engine, Google is now a leader in energy conservation and supporting green energy. In 2022, Google reached 64% carbon-free energy globally on an hourly basis. In doing this, they built the world’s most energy-efficient data centers and used clean and renewable energy sources such as windmills and solar panels.
2) S.C. Johnson — The global manufacturer of household products is dedicated to lowering its impact on the environment by reducing the amount of volatile organic compounds in Windex and the amount of polyvinylidene chloride used to produce Saran Wrap. Beyond that, they have two 415-foot-tall wind turbines to power their largest global manufacturing facility, and all their global consumer brand factories send zero manufacturing waste to landfills. Here are a few more ways S.C. Johnson supports a more sustainable world.
3) Bank of America — To significantly contribute to commercial recycling, Bank of America has transitioned all plastic credit and debit card products to be made from at least 80% recycled plastic as of 2023. Moreover, their goal is to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions in their worldwide financing activities, operations, and supply chain before 2050. Read more here.

4) Coca-Cola — Coke strives to protect the environment and drive its unique commercial recycling efforts through enhanced water preservation, efficient energies, and sustainable packaging. In fact, 61% of the equivalent bottles and cans they introduced into the market in 2022 were collected and refilled or collected through commercial recycling efforts. Coca-Cola also takes an active role in community recycling programs.
5) Hewlett Packard — HP ensures that all of its branded materials are recyclable and continues to open e-waste recycling plants worldwide. Hewlett Packard follows sustainable manufacturing standards to this day.
6) Citibank — To help responsibly transition to a low-carbon economy, Citibank is working with clients to decarbonize their business and financing innovative solutions in areas like renewable energy and clean technology.
7) Amazon — Amazon strives to have as little impact on the environment as possible. In fact, they were the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy for the fourth year in a row and recently transported goods on the first-ever zero-emission capable cargo ship. It has added solar energy systems to its fulfillment centers, uses LED lighting, and has developed renewable energy farms to power electricity for its data centers.
8) United Health Group — UHG has lofty goals for its sustainability efforts, including reducing scope 1 and 2 emissions by 60% by 2030 and reaching operational net zero by 2035.
9) Starbucks — The most widely recognized coffee producer continues to be a green company and supporter of commercial recycling efforts through eco-conscious store design, renewable energies to power locations, reducing and recycling waste, and more.
A small business likely does not have the financial backing of these national green companies to support environmental policies and commercial recycling on such a large scale. However, if you are in a smaller company, you can still follow some of the same strategies to become more sustainable in the workplace.
