One of Texas Recycling’s favorite annual events to recycle paper, cardboard, metal, and more is happening: Texas Recycles Day is November 15, 2024. This special day coincides with America Recycles Day, a nationally recognized day overseen by Keep America Beautiful dedicated to recycling and recycling education. Of course, everything is bigger in the Lone Star State. Texas Recycles Day, overseen by the State of Texas Alliance for Recycling (STAR), was established in 1994. But many people may not realize that it was used as the model for the national day, which was first observed in 1997.
Standardizing outreach efforts across the state through days like Texas Recycles Day can greatly impact recycling in Texas. This is important because even though we’ve progressed in recent years, we still have a long way to go. Statistics show that while most Americans support the need to recycle paper, cardboard, metal, and more, the national average recycling rate is only 32%. Furthermore, recycling rates in Texas reveal that it is one of the most wasteful states in the nation. At 23%, the statewide rate falls almost 12 points below the national average (34.7%).
How Texas Communities Benefit From Recycling
- Reducing the amount of waste in landfills
- Reducing and conserving the amount of natural resources utilized
- Reducing the use of virgin materials that need to be manufactured
- Less pollution
- Saving energy
- Creating jobs
Based on the most recent available data, only Austin and Plano exceed the national average mentioned above. We only have one Earth, and we must do our part locally. To learn how to get involved, use the Texas Recycles Day outreach calendar to recycle right all year long.

Why Is Texas Recycles Day So Valuable?
Texas Recycles Day raises awareness about recycling programs in local municipalities and educates about the benefits of recycling to our communities and environment. These include saving valuable resources, reducing emissions, saving energy, creating jobs, and supporting a circular economy by creating something new. This is true regardless of whether you love to recycle paper, cardboard, metal, plastic, or glass.
Take metal and steel, for example. Steel is a costly and useful material used to manufacture automobiles and household appliances. It is also widely used in the construction industry. The same is true for metal. It’s easily one of the best items to recycle for money. You may already know this if you’ve ever visited a scrap yard for cars or other scrap facilities.
What can you do to observe Texas Recycles Day? On days around November 15, we encourage you to participate in an event in your area. For example:
- Texas Recycles Day at the Heard Museum is slated for November 15, 16 and 17 and is sponsored by H-E-B.
- United Electronic Recycling Day is Plano’s Texas Recycling Day event, slated for 8:30 a.m. to noon on November 9.
- Dallas Farmers Market has a special recycling event on November 16, 9:00 am – 2:00 pm, with on-site collection of flexible films and common household plastics, on-site collection of electronics and household appliances, workshop on how to re: Compost, and on-site collection of textiles. Stop by at 920 South Harwood Street, Dallas, TX 75201.
Even if you can’t attend a community event to recycle paper, cardboard, metal, and more, make it a point to recycle and donate items that would otherwise end up in the landfill. Actively seek out recycling centers and information about what can be recycled in your town. Take the pledge to reduce, reuse, and recycle!
